Leyendecker painted this for Kuppenheimer's menswear campaign in the 1910s, when the Chicago clothier built its reputation on athletic tailoring worn by America's collegiate elite. Below him, two rowers hunch bare-chested at the rigging, forearms corded from the pull, white shorts bright against tan skin rendered in quick highlight strokes rather than smooth blending.
The coach's hand lands on one rower's shoulder, a gesture of instruction mid-motion, his white shoes braced wide on the shell's wooden gunwale. Navy dominates the upper field, isolating the tailored figure against nothing but color and posture.
Leyendecker's commercial illustration sold suits through implied authority: the well-dressed man commanding physical labor without breaking his own crease. Below, a cream panel waits empty, ad copy space left blank, letting the composition's vertical thrust and the coach's downward gaze carry the entire pitch alone.
