About this Artwork
In Gustave Courtois's Portrait of the Athlete Maurice Deriaz, the strongman's hands do the talking, the left clasping the right low beneath a pale blue sash knotted at his hip. The 1907 oil on canvas holds a champion Greco-Roman wrestler in a moment of banked force, biceps softly flexed, forearms crossed over a compact torso.
Deriaz had come to Paris at eighteen to work his brother Emile's gymnasium, one of seven athletic Deriaz brothers from Baulmes. By the time Courtois posed him, he was a cover star of La Culture Physique, the muscle magazine of a physical-culture age that idolized Eugen Sandow.
Studio light rounds each shoulder and rib into low relief, the surface modeling soft and unforced. Here that arena strength turns quiet and inward, its power kept in reserve. The knotted sash with its silvered fringe is his only costume, and the clasped grip speaks of a man keeping his own counsel above that fringed teal knot.
