Artwork Description
Maurice Desvallières and Imprimerie Champenois fused printmaker's craft with antiquarian fantasy in Porteur d'Amphore, their 1899 color lithograph for the L'Estampe Moderne series. The bearer pivots in three-quarter rear view, olive-ochre flesh mapped in tight cross-hatched line work, one arm raised to cradle a voluted white amphora whose weight bends the torso into taut diagonal. A narrow headband and gold earring place him in a Greco-Roman antiquity filtered through French Art Nouveau's appetite for Mediterranean pageant.
Behind him, a crimson-brown sculptural pedestal lifts an ornamental urn against powder-blue sky, while dark topiary frames a columned terrace receding into haze. Below, a tipped terracotta vessel bleeds pale yellow fruit across a rose-crimson tiled floor — abundance pitched at the edge of spill.
The salmon-pink Greek key meander border and gilded vine-leaf garland overhead seal the image as decorative program, a fin-de-siècle collector's print where academic nude study and Belle Époque chromolithography meet.
