In George Ashdown Audsley's Painting of Flowers in a Vase, a white lotus drifts off a sepia ground smooth as cooled tea. One jade-green leaf tips like a parasol caught in a gust. Its rim browns to smoky umber. Silver specks freckle the veins. Above it a lotus seed pod lifts on a crooked stem, every cup loaded with next summer.
The dark vase holds the right edge on a vermilion stand. Across its belly a Taoist immortal rides a phoenix through curling clouds, persimmon plumes flaring behind him. Beside it sits a black planter of lingzhi mushrooms, caps swirled rust and moss, the old Chinese sign for long life.
Audsley, a Liverpool architect swept up in Victorian Japonisme, issued this chromolithograph in The Ornamental Arts of Japan between 1882 and 1884. Raised gold still glints across the Meiji craft he copied. Hang this vintage Japanese art print and watch a chrysanthemum branch creep in from the left, pearl petals shining over copper leaves, one small autumn walking into a summer room.
