Paulownias and Chrysanthemums begins with a calendar that refuses to turn. Sakai Hoitsu lets a late-spring tree and an autumn flower share one sheet of beaten gold leaf, and the Edo period holds still to watch.

Follow the indigo stream. It coils out of sprinkled gold dust, its eddies drawn in hair-thin metallic line, a current borrowed from Ogata Korin and slowed to a walking pace. An old Noh legend tells of the Chrysanthemum Boy, whose flower dew dripped into a mountain creek and turned it into a drink of long life. Hoitsu, a practiced haikai poet, plants saffron-yellow kiku right at the waterline, close enough to drip.

Above them the kiri tree leans in, heavy with azurite blossom and malachite leaf. Verdigris patches flower across its trunk, pooled wet into wet by the tarashikomi method that marks the Rinpa school. Ivory blooms crowd the celadon hill.

This Japanese art print brings a folding screen's impossible year indoors. Two seasons share one bank in thisEdo Rinpa masterwork tipping a whole room toward its warm metal light.

Origin Story

Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1829) was a Japanese painter, poet and priest who carried the Rinpa school from Kyoto's gilded past into the city of his birth. Born in Edo to the Sakai daimyō family of Himeji, he moved through the Kanō school, ukiyo-e under Utagawa Toyoharu, the Maruyama school and nanga before finding his lineage in Ogata Kōrin. After taking Buddhist vows in 1797, he studied Kōrin and Ogata Kenzan, publishing Kōrin Hyakuzu in 1815.

His folding screens breathe. In Flowering Plants of Summer and Autumn, painted on the reverse of Kōrin's Wind God and Thunder God, rain-bent grasses and a swollen stream tremble across a silver ground; the pair is now an Important Cultural Property at the Tokyo National Museum. From his Negishi studio, Ugean, he wrote haiku and brushed haiga, forging an Edo Rinpa where decoration becomes weather.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
