This plate gave them a storm in miniature. Seafoam dashes tumble down a sable ground in long diagonal rows. Each row doubles as kanoko shibori, the Kyoto dyer's old trick of tying cloth into specks of sky.
Low on the skirt, a paper umbrella tips onto its side. Its salmon-pink border circles an ivory core where charcoal spokes gather at the hub. Persimmon maple leaves cling to the paper. A celadon leaf lifts away toward the grip.
Look closer and the mokuhanga grain rises through the black, a soft weave pressed from cherry wood. An emerald hem flares beneath it all, new moss after rain. Hang this kimono art print by the front door where umbrellas wait for autumn to arrive.
