About this Artwork
Saturnino Herrán pressed the figures of Our Ancient Gods into a near-relief composition, flesh in raw umber and olive-brown fills the picture's lower two-thirds — muscular torsos, bare feet, the soft press of arms against arms — while above them a rust-red fan of ceremonial feathers ignites the upper corner like a coal held to air.
The striped solar disc in black, ivory and warm gold holds the spatial anchor: it reads as ceremonial shield, cosmic marker, or Aztec cosmological symbol depending on what 1916 Mexico City needed it to be. Herrán died in 1918, one year before he could complete his triptych Our Gods. This painting survives as the premise of that unfinished argument — indigenous México, figured in flesh and ochre firelight, asking to be looked at without apology.
