Jan Toorop drew O Grave, Where Is Thy Victory in 1892, and its challenge still hangs over the open tomb below. Two seraphim float above it on honey ochre paper, their hair pouring across the sheet in ribbons of pencil hatching. Long fingers pick thorn branches from a dead man’s brow. One coil at a time.

The title comes from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, where death loses its sting. Toorop answers with line in an allegory of death and resurrection, shaded in sepia and burnt sienna.

Each whiplash curve bends toward the sleeper’s closed eyes, a current of Art Nouveau ornament put to work as mercy. Soot-heavy chalk thickens at the right edge, where bearded faces and knotted knuckles crowd under a leafy tree and a chain drags at the drapery.

This Dutch Symbolist drawing belongs to the fin-de-siècle years when Toorop showed with Les XX in Brussels. As a fine art print it brings umber shadow and parchment glow to a wall. Above the far hills a single arc of light leans down, and the grave stays empty.

Origin Story

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a Dutch painter whose lines drift like smoke through a bridal veil. Born Johannes Theodorus Toorop in Purworejo, Java, in the Dutch East Indies, he spent his childhood on Bangka before sailing for the Netherlands in 1869. He studied in Delft, at Amsterdam’s Rijksakademie and in Brussels, joining Les XX beside James Ensor while moving through Realism, Impressionism and Pointillism. Javanese motifs gave his Symbolism its restless pulse: willowy figures and rippling hair coiling through The Three Brides (1893).

Those lines turned public in his Delftsche Slaolie poster, a landmark of Dutch Art Nouveau. From 1897 he anchored an artists’ circle at Domburg in Zeeland that included Piet Mondrian. After converting to Catholicism in 1905, he devoted himself to religious painting and stained glass. His work now hangs in the Kröller-Müller Museum.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
