About the Artwork

Anders Zorn paints his hometown's bathing ritual at the moment of crossing — a Dalecarlian bather poised on the wooden lip of a Mora sauna, fingers steadying her on the rough plank doorjamb. Her body emerges luminous against the smoke-stained interior, modeled in bone-white impasto where lamplight strikes the shoulder, hip, and lifted thigh.

Painted in 1900 at the height of Zorn's Swedish realism, this charcoal-toned oil belongs to his lifelong study of Nordic women bathing — the bastu rite that anchored rural Lapland summers. A simple hair fillet binds her crown like a Roman coin profile. Loose, wet-into-wet brushwork dissolves the threshold timber into atmospheric softness.

Zorn's celebrated limited palette — ivory black, marble white — reduces flesh to sculptural intimacy, capturing the unguarded poise of late-Victorian Scandinavian portraiture.

Origin Story

Anders Leonard Zorn (1860–1920) rose from a farm in Mora, Dalarna, to become Sweden's most celebrated international artist. Trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, he mastered watercolour before switching decisively to oils, developing a bold Impressionist style built on a famously spare four-colour palette — lead white, yellow ochre, vermilion, and ivory black. Travels through London, Paris, Spain, Algeria, and the United States sharpened both his technique and his ambition, earning him a Légion d'honneur at twenty-nine.

His portraits of three American presidents — Cleveland, Taft, and Roosevelt — alongside King Oscar II and European high society made him the rival of John Singer Sargent. Yet Zorn's truest power lies in his Dalarna folk scenes and luminous nude studies, where Nordic light shimmers off water and skin with astonishing immediacy. His etchings, nudes, and Midsummer Dance endure at the Nationalmuseum, the Musée d'Orsay, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
