About this Artwork
A slope thrums under a violet haze where torchlight licks through sulfur smoke. Pryanishnikov’s 1875 vision erupts with winged phantoms, contorted bodies, and spinning halos of ember and soot.
Each streak of pigment—raw umber, ochre flare, and bruised black—grinds terror into oil’s skin. He conjures Russian folklore as spectacle: the witches’ sabbath, a mountain trembling under its own myth.
Figures blur between flame and flesh, their outlines cracked by heat and fear. The painter’s brush staggers through hysteria, inventing light out of despair.
