Origin Story

Lillian Causey (1889–1949) was an American draughtswoman who turned quilts, bonnets, and petticoats into acts of national memory. Working for the Index of American Design, the Depression-era Federal Art Project under the WPA, she rendered folk textiles and everyday objects in watercolor, graphite, and gouache with forensic precision — every lace pattern, every stitch, held up to scrutiny. Little survives of her early training; her legacy lives instead in the objects she preserved.

Petticoats, Quaker bonnets, gowns, slippers, and parasols pass through her hand like specimens under glass, each rendering doubling as record and homage. Now held by the National Gallery of Art, her work safeguards vernacular American craft — Quaker dress, Shaker austerity, Baltimore Album quilting — as artistry in its own right, not decoration but documentation raised to art.
