About this Artwork
Edward Penfield's Man in Carriage cuts 1896 New York into flat planes of teal-green and black. The coachman looms at the picture's edge — top hat tilted, gaze floating above the fray — while the passenger below sits sealed in his plaid overcoat, umbrella stem at his lip, the carriage window framing him like a calling card no one has yet claimed. Cadmium yellow reins pull taut between gloved hand and dapple-grey horse, a chromolithographic line of tension threading the whole scene.
Penfield, Harper's Monthly art director and pioneer of American poster design, borrowed the flat color field and eliminated shadow, letting stippled ash-grey and warm buff-tan do the work of three dimensions. The red-and-white brow band on the horse flares like punctuation — the one note of levity in a city that never looked up.
A poster art composition that strips Gilded Age street life to its barest graphic grammar. Penfield's American Art Nouveau draftsmanship holding everything in clean ink outline and flat color wash — a zinc plate technique that elevated the commercial poster into fine art printmaking.
