Magnolia Altissima - Mark Catesby Phone Case

Mark Catesby's Magnolia Altissima opens across the frame in a single unshielded bloom, the ivory-cream petals catching every hatched line his copperplate engraving pressed into being. This is Magnolia grandiflora as Catesby's Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands first fixed it, a colonial Carolina specimen he drew only when freshly gathered, letting no petal bend toward invention.

The pink-striped cone at the flower's center lifts an ochre-yellow anther cluster into view, ringed by yellow-green foliage whose veins still carry the discipline of eighteenth-century botanical illustration. Sir Hans Sloane's patronage sent Catesby into this Carolina wilderness, and what came back was a self-taught engraver's insistence on holding the flower open at the exact moment of its blooming, a compositional choice historians tie to his documented refusal to draw from anything but a living or freshly gathered specimen.

Behind the bloom, dark umber ground swallows the yellow-green leaves into shadow, leaving only the ivory-cream petals and their ochre-yellow center to hold the light.
