Kimono with Iris Pattern turns its back on you, and Okada Saburōsuke makes that refusal the whole seduction. Painted in 1927, the second year of Shōwa, this Japanese oil painting holds a young woman in a pool of mustard ochre light. Her blue-black chignon coils like a sleeping snake. Stray hairs escape at the nape.
The silk has slipped. One pale shoulder blade rises from the cobalt blue robe, its skin warmed by a peach flush near the ear. White iris blossoms climb the cloth on ochre and sage stems, flowers of early summer that share a name with the shōbu leaves families float in May baths for Tango no Sekku. Across her hips runs a persimmon orange band freckled with shibori tie-dye. Each dot was a knot someone once tied by hand.
Okada learned his soft academic realism under Raphaël Collin in Paris. Back in Tokyo he folded it into yōga beside Kuroda Seiki and the White Horse Society. Two schools meeting on one spine as we are left wondering if she will ever turn to face us.
