Heinrich Friedrich Füger paints Jupiter's fist locked overhead against a pale olive sky, the arm frozen at the instant before a Roman king of Olympus might hurl his bolt.

This oil panel, made in Vienna near 1800, belongs to the artist's late Neoclassical period, when his brushwork on drapery grew looser and his flesh painting stayed tight and academic. Chiaroscuro carves the bearded torso from black shadow, warm ochre and rose tones catching diagonal light that falls from the upper left corner.

Curling dark hair and a full beard frame a face set in quiet command, eyes turned past the frame. His left hand rests on gold-tipped thunderbolt forms bundled against a heavy crimson drapery that pools across his lap and down one bare leg. Beside him, barely lit, an eagle's wing presses into gray rock. Füger holds his king of the gods suspended between calm and violence, the closed hand still waiting, the sky around it pale and unmarked.
Origin Story

Heinrich Friedrich Füger (1751–1818) was the German painter who carried Neoclassicism from Heilbronn to the heart of imperial Vienna. Trained under Nicolas Guibal in Stuttgart and Adam Friedrich Oeser in Leipzig, he refined his classicist vision in Rome under Anton Raphael Mengs, absorbing Winckelmann's ideals and the excavated wonders of Herculaneum and Pompeii. His frescoes grace the Palazzo Caserta near Naples.

Court painter, portrait miniaturist, and history painter, Füger rose to direct the Vienna Academy and the Belvedere gallery. The Death of Germanicus and Allegory on the Peace of Vienna showcase his theatrical grandeur, while sitters included Mozart, Emperor Joseph II, and Horatio Nelson.

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
