About this Artwork
Heinrich Friedrich Füger paints Jupiter's fist locked overhead against a pale olive sky, the arm frozen at the instant before a Roman king of Olympus might hurl his bolt.
This oil panel, made in Vienna near 1800, belongs to the artist's late Neoclassical period, when his brushwork on drapery grew looser and his flesh painting stayed tight and academic. Chiaroscuro carves the bearded torso from black shadow, warm ochre and rose tones catching diagonal light that falls from the upper left corner.
Curling dark hair and a full beard frame a face set in quiet command, eyes turned past the frame. His left hand rests on gold-tipped thunderbolt forms bundled against a heavy crimson drapery that pools across his lap and down one bare leg. Beside him, barely lit, an eagle's wing presses into gray rock. Füger holds his king of the gods suspended between calm and violence, the closed hand still waiting, the sky around it pale and unmarked.
