Rain is on its way in Tachibana Yasukuni's Japanese hydrangea, and every floret knows it. Mophead blooms crowd the lower left of this vintage woodcut, each one built from tiny rings with a pinprick eye. Around them, the leaves take turns. Some are flooded with sumi black, their veins cut clean from the cherry wood block and left paper-pale. Others stay open, ribbed in thin line.

The Japanese call the plant ajisai, flower of tsuyu, the June rains. Its petals shift shade with the soil, so it earned a name for a wandering heart. To the right, an arching spray of spirea leans out under a brushed inscription that reads kodemari, little handball.

Yasukuni drew this page for Ehon Noyamagusa, his five-volume picture book of field and mountain plants, printed in Osaka in 1755. Yasukuni learned brush habits from his father, the Osaka book illustrator Tachibana Morikuni, and the Kano school line shows in each scalloped edge. Full-color printing was a decade off. Edo period readers got ink on pearl gray washi, held there by a carver's nerve.

This monochrome floral wall art suits a room that likes to think. Summer in old Japan arrives one hand-carved petal at a time.

Origin Story

Tachibana Yasukuni (1715–1792) was a Japanese painter and printmaker of the Kamigata school, active through the mid-Edo period in Osaka. Son and pupil of Tachibana Morikuni, he inherited the disciplined brushwork of the Kanō tradition, honoured with the Buddhist ranks of hokkyō in 1755 and hōgen in 1770. Yet his lasting mark came not from dragons or sages but from wildflowers: his five-volume woodblock masterpiece Ehon Noyama Gusa (1755) turned meadow-fleabane, motherwort, and bristle grass into subjects worthy of elite technique.

In doing so, Yasukuni quietly democratised painting's grandest tools, applying Kanō precision to humble field plants and proving structural beauty could bloom in the overlooked. His delicate monochrome prints, later reissued through the nineteenth century, remain touchstones of Japanese botanical illustration—patient, exacting, and rooted in genuine observation of the natural world.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
