Léon Bonnat's 1876 etching La Lutte de Jacob catches Jacob mid-collapse, head bowed into the angel's collarbone as if sleep and combat had become one motion.

Bonnat trained under Madrazo in Madrid before absorbing Velázquez's tonal restraint, translating this Genesis wrestling match into a private exchange rather than public spectacle. Fine crosshatched linework builds the angel's feathered wingspan from hundreds of overlapping strokes, each pass deepening the shadow pooling at Peniel's edge.

Jacob's arm crosses the angel's back, knuckles pale against the drypoint burr where the plate caught light. Shadows fall in a Ribera-inflected chiaroscuro, thickest where Jacob's raised leg hooks behind the angel's calf in the hip-lock grapple that gives the print its title. Drapery knots at his hip, the only cloth in a field of bare flesh and burnt-umber ink.

The source painting hung at the Salon of 1876 before this plate reached the Gazette des Beaux-Arts on buff laid paper, monogram LB set low at right. Both bodies fusing into one mass of hatched ink at the hour Genesis calls daybreak.
Origin Story

Léon Bonnat (1833–1922) was the French painter who made the Third Republic sit for its portrait. Born in Bayonne and raised in Madrid, he absorbed Velázquez and Ribera in the Prado, carrying Spanish tenebrism into Parisian academic realism. Victor Hugo, Louis Pasteur, and presidents posed beneath his stark, unsparing brush, while religious canvases—Christ on the Cross, Job, the Pantheon's Martyrdom of Saint Denis—blazed with sombre power.

As professor and director of the École des Beaux-Arts, he trained Sargent, Toulouse-Lautrec, Munch, Caillebotte, and Braque. His lifelong collecting founded the Musée Bonnat in Bayonne, an Old Master treasury from Leonardo to Ingres.

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
