Artwork Description
She sits within a knotted black arabesque cage of ironwork lines, the Belle Époque's most famous draftsman bending lithographic stone into filigree. Mucha drew her for Robert de Flers' 1897 fairy-tale of Ilsée — princess of Tripoli, beloved of Jaufré Rudel, the troubadour who died at her feet.
Cabochons of carnelian-orange flare across her diadem. A celadon robe pools into mauve-rose underskirts, both hands cradling lion-mask door-knockers cast in bronze relief. Behind her, a second figure leans close, mouth grazing her ear — the lady-in-waiting passing news of the dying poet across the Mediterranean. Cream doves spread their wings above.
Published by Piazza, Paris, this color lithograph distills fin-de-siècle Parisian Art Nouveau, courtly love, and Provençal romance into a single arched panel of decorative reverie.
