Harvard-Yale Boat Race, Scribner's 1905 - J.C. Leyendecker Art Print

Leyendecker built this Harvard-Yale boat race scene backward from muscle: two oarsmen, stripped to white cotton shorts, hunch into the stroke with shoulder blades cut sharp against tanned skin. Scribner's Magazine ran this July 1905 illustration at the height of Ivy League rowing rivalry, when regatta season turned college crews into public spectacle.
One rower's hand grips a wooden oar handle, knuckles white against dark grain. His partner's neck bends low, chin near collarbone, eyes fixed on the coxswain unseen ahead. Around the sculling shell, the Thames River current fractures into pale yellow and olive shards, a broken-color technique borrowed from the era's color-plate presses, each ripple a separate brushstroke rather than a wash.
Beside them a gray-hulled launch carries spectators in dark silhouette, a floating grandstand trailing the shell's wake. Leyendecker crafting college athletics as theater of discipline here. His commercial eye, later famous for the Arrow Collar Man, finding its rawer prototype. The American athlete as national icon: sweat-lit, sun-browned, motion suspended mid-stroke, oarlocks gleaming, cotton shorts pale against sunburned skin. The river caught mid-shimmer before the next surge forward.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical
Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal
Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)
Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws
Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
