Japan writes this bird's name, shijūkara, with the characters for forty sparrows. An old saying prices one tit at that many.

Ohara Koson's Great Tit on Paulownia Branch shows why. The little acrobat swings upside down on a cocoa-brown runner, blue-gray claws locked, tail flicked at the sky. Ultramarine wing feathers lie barred in sumi ink and edged in ivory. A black hood frames one pale cheek, and the beak points down at empty paper.

Overhead, autumn burns slowly. Vermilion leaves crowd the top of the tall ōban sheet and thin to apricot where the printer wiped the color away. Indigo berries cluster among them. Poets call this fall color tsuta momiji, the scarlet ivy that overruns the mountain pass in The Tales of Ise.

Koson designed the scene between 1925 and 1936 for publisher Watanabe, whose shin-hanga, or new prints, shipped from Tokyo to collectors in America. Half the washi stays bare, pale as oat milk.

Give this Japanese bird art print a quiet wall. In kachō-e, the bird-and-flower tradition, autumn lasts one afternoon, and this one refuses to end.

Origin Story

Ohara Koson, born in 1877 in Kanazawa, was a Japanese woodblock artist whose prints capture the fleeting beauty of nature. He revitalized traditional ukiyo-e through the shin-hanga movement, transforming each kachō-e piece into an exquisite meditation on nature’s poetry. Cranes in mid-flight, cherry blossoms poised to fall—Koson’s art captures ephemeral elegance with soft pigments and negative space, evoking a quiet resonance.

Koson's portfolio chronicles Japan’s shifting identity during the Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa periods. His work, forgotten after his death in 1945, has since risen, symbolizing the timeless harmony between tradition and innovation.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
