Inside a dim timber bathhouse in the parish of Mora, two women move through the steam of a Dalarna summer evening, their bodies modeled in warm peach and ivory against burnt-umber planks.
Anders Zorn paints the central figure standing tall, a scarlet ribbon at her hair, ladling water across a wooden tub with a gesture pulled straight from Swedish folk life. Vermilion drapery flares behind her like a quiet fire.
Loose alla prima brushwork dissolves anatomy into atmosphere, registering Zorn’s debt to Velázquez and his rivalry with Sargent. The crouched bather scrubs in the foreground, her spine catching ochre light.
This 1908 oil sketch belongs to Zorn’s late nude studies, where Nordic naturalism met cosmopolitan painterly bravura on a single linen surface.
