Crouch in the marsh grass and watch these Flying Geese soar overhead. Ohara Koson sets you among ink-gray reeds, where a pale inlet glints and the ground sinks into a charcoal bokashi fade. Then the wingbeats arrive.
Two larger geese pass close enough to count feathers. The nearer bird wears cocoa-brown plumage edged in cream, each scallop cut by a carver's knife. A snowy blaze rims its tangerine bill. Its companion glows peach and dove-gray, throat stretched mid-call, orange feet tucked tight.
Higher up, a loose chevron of four birds thins into aqua haze. Distance softens them into memory.
Born in Kanazawa, Koson shaped kacho-e for the shin-hanga movement, and this bird print carries his Shoson signature beside a cinnabar seal. Printers pressed damp mulberry paper over carved cherry blocks until each feather held its own grain.
