A gust crosses the bridge at Arashiyama. One courtier loses his grip. Sakai Hoitsu paints the second after, and this Fans and Stream art print holds it open. Japanese folding fans tumble down a field of gold toward water of azurite blue. Each is a small painting thrown away for the joy of watching it fall.

Read them as a calendar coming apart. A peony opens in oyster-shell white, pinned by vermilion ribs. Mount Fuji keeps its snowcap above a slope of malachite green. At the bank an iris has gone violet-blue and a branch of plum blossom is already going under. Ink-wash hills sit beside a cinnabar leaf banded with cloud and pine. A red-cheeked pheasant struts past camellias blotted onto leaves of pooled sumi, the wet-in-wet trick called tarashikomi. Four seasons, loose in one afternoon.

Hoitsu was born into the Sakai house, lords of Himeji Castle, then shaved his head and chose the brush. He painted these panels late in the Edo period, two centuries after Tawaraya Sotatsu sold painted fans from a Kyoto shop. Call it Edo Rinpa: the old capital's game replayed far east of that river. The stream curls gold eddies around every paper moon it swallows.

Origin Story

Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1829) was a Japanese painter, poet and priest who carried the Rinpa school from Kyoto's gilded past into the city of his birth. Born in Edo to the Sakai daimyō family of Himeji, he moved through the Kanō school, ukiyo-e under Utagawa Toyoharu, the Maruyama school and nanga before finding his lineage in Ogata Kōrin. After taking Buddhist vows in 1797, he studied Kōrin and Ogata Kenzan, publishing Kōrin Hyakuzu in 1815.

His folding screens breathe. In Flowering Plants of Summer and Autumn, painted on the reverse of Kōrin's Wind God and Thunder God, rain-bent grasses and a swollen stream tremble across a silver ground; the pair is now an Important Cultural Property at the Tokyo National Museum. From his Negishi studio, Ugean, he wrote haiku and brushed haiga, forging an Edo Rinpa where decoration becomes weather.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
