Censorship emptied the stages of Tenpō-era Edo. The frogs came out anyway. After Mizuno Tadakuni's reforms struck actor prints from the market, Utagawa Kuniyoshi redrew his kabuki heroes as amphibians and dared anyone to object. Famous Heroes of the Kabuki Stage Played by Frogs is his rebellious grin in Berlin blue.
Each toad rose from a cherry woodblock, carved one at a time. Ochre hides go speckled with slate gray warts. A samurai frog in charcoal kimono and indigo hakama waits with two blades at his hip. Beside him a partner in leaf-print indigo leans in to strike. The Chūshingura vendetta of the loyal rōnin croaks toward its finale. Higher on the sheet, Soga Gorō's bravado puffs a belly pale as fresh mochi.
Kuniyoshi's frog print is nishiki-e brocade humor with a straight face. Tiny name slips float beside each actor in pale saffron. Every creature holds its mie pose and glares with total conviction. Hang this vintage Japanese wall art where guests can hear the pond applaud.
