Ohara Koson's Cockatoo and Pomegranate catches a chalk-white cockatoo mid-squawk, slate-blue beak open on a shell-pink tongue. One claw grips the ash-gray branch. The other lifts to its chest, a small fist of scales held against scalloped feathers. Behind it, lamp-black ink swallows every hint of garden and hour.

Kanazawa-born Koson trained under Suzuki Kason in the Nihonga manner before turning to kachō-e, the old Japanese bird-and-flower genre. He knew what he was pairing. In Buddhist temples Kishimojin holds a pomegranate for its countless seeds, a promise of children and luck. Cockatoos reached Japan as cargo on Dutch ships at Nagasaki, and Itō Jakuchū painted these prized imports in eighteenth-century Kyoto. So a ship-borne bird ignores a sacred fruit against a jet-ink sky, early Shōwa wit served cold.

At lower left a split pomegranate shows its crimson rind and wet rows of seed. The cockatoo looks the other way. Above the vermilion seal a single coral bud waits on its twig, one held note in a loud room. Hang this vintage Japanese woodblock art print where guests gather, and let the uneaten seeds keep everyone guessing who gets fed.

Origin Story

Ohara Koson, born in 1877 in Kanazawa, was a Japanese woodblock artist whose prints capture the fleeting beauty of nature. He revitalized traditional ukiyo-e through the shin-hanga movement, transforming each kachō-e piece into an exquisite meditation on nature’s poetry. Cranes in mid-flight, cherry blossoms poised to fall—Koson’s art captures ephemeral elegance with soft pigments and negative space, evoking a quiet resonance.

Koson's portfolio chronicles Japan’s shifting identity during the Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa periods. His work, forgotten after his death in 1945, has since risen, symbolizing the timeless harmony between tradition and innovation.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
