Carnival light spills across Ralph Barton's Chauve Souris, his 1922 theatrical program cover now wrapped around your iPhone. The coral-clad performer tilts through teal medallions and striped canopy folds, frozen mid-pirouette in the haze of Balieff's Russian emigré revue.
Barton drew for Vanity Fair, skewered celebrities with pen-and-ink malice, yet here he softened—marigold yellow pooling against magenta drapes, burnt sienna rosettes blooming where satire once bit. The harlequin below wears checkered motley beneath a stovepipe hat, his gaze lost in the carousel's amber-gold spin.
