Anton Pavlovich Losenko’s Cain (1768) captures the raw body as site of turmoil, his seated form caught in a half-turn, shoulders tensed, torso gleaming with harsh illumination.

Cain's muscular frame twists away from your gaze, shadows carving deep ridges across abdomen, ribs, and outstretched arm. Head angled sharply, jaw set, expression locked in troubled recoil. Drapery of heavy green cloth clings loosely across thigh and stone, a fragment of modesty that amplifies the vulnerability of exposed flesh.

Painted in the academic neoclassical mode, every vein and tendon is honed with sculptural precision. Losenko stages Cain’s torment as both psychological and corporeal, a theatrical meditation on guilt, mortality, and the relentless weight of myth in eighteenth-century Russian painting.
Origin Story

Anton Losenko (1737–1773) was a Russian neoclassical painter whose short life managed to rewrite the rules of academic art in the empire. Born in Hlukhiv (now Ukraine), orphaned young, and shunted from choirboy to apprentice, he clawed his way into the Imperial Academy of Arts. Paris gave him discipline under Jean II Restout, Rome gave him Raphael’s ghosts, and St. Petersburg gave him the stage. His monumental Vladimir and Rogneda secured his professorship, while his textbook Short Explanation of the Human Proportions trained generations. A founder of Russia’s historical school of painting, he died at 36 but left art that still feels commanding.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
