About this Artwork
Anton Pavlovich Losenko’s Cain (1768) captures the raw body as site of turmoil, his seated form caught in a half-turn, shoulders tensed, torso gleaming with harsh illumination.
Cain's muscular frame twists away from your gaze, shadows carving deep ridges across abdomen, ribs, and outstretched arm. Head angled sharply, jaw set, expression locked in troubled recoil. Drapery of heavy green cloth clings loosely across thigh and stone, a fragment of modesty that amplifies the vulnerability of exposed flesh.
Painted in the academic neoclassical mode, every vein and tendon is honed with sculptural precision. Losenko stages Cain’s torment as both psychological and corporeal, a theatrical meditation on guilt, mortality, and the relentless weight of myth in eighteenth-century Russian painting.
