This 1917 watercolor and graphite sheet catches wartime Greenwich Village nightlife on the cusp of the Jazz Age. Pencil underdrawing runs through each figure like stitching left on purpose. Wet-in-wet blooms of burnt sienna soak the floor. A jaunty man in olive plants a fist on his hip before a scarlet doorway. Beside an empty bentwood chair, a flushed guitarist strums a mustard-yellow belly.
