About the Artwork

Essaouira's harbor is so full of boats that a man can cross it on foot. Blue hulls overlap in rows that run the length of the frame, and the man in the corner of the frame steps along the gunwales. Ropes in rust brown and nets in gray pull between the boats, and a number is stenciled on a bow, 1504 at the lower right. Cobalt, cerulean and navy shade together until the harbor reads as one moving surface. A gull perches on a prow near the center, pale against the hulls.

Essaouira was laid out in the 1760s under Sultan Mohammed III, with the French engineer Théodore Cornut directing the walls. Caravans came down from the Atlas to its quays, and the harbor became the place where inland commerce met the sea. But under King Juba II, over thousands years earlier, workshops on Essaouira's offshore islands crushed murex shellfish for a purple dye prized across the Roman world. The Romans called those islands the Purple Islands, and the dye shops made Essaouira's coast a name in distant cities.

Sardines now gather off this coast where the Canary Current pushes cold water up from below, and the island of Mogador shelters the bay. The photograph holds every strand of rope and every flake of paint in sharp detail, and orange and cream netting piles at the lower center. The sun turns the hulls deep and glossy where they curve.

Blue Feluccas, Essaouira, Morocco awaits your kitchen or study as a fishing harbor scene, where the sea that once gave Rome its purple now gives your wall its depth.
