Arrow Collars, Cluett Shirts - J.C. Leyendecker Art Print / Canvas

J.C. Leyendecker's Arrow Collars, Cluett Shirts (1910) opens mid-gesture, wrist cocked as though the race might close before the motorcar stops. Commissioned for Cluett, Peabody and Co., the plate turned menswear retail into a tableau of leisure, its four figures crowded around a touring car's chrome grille and brass headlamp with the ease of men who have nowhere urgent to be. 

Road racing drew exactly this crowd of moneyed onlookers to the Northeast after 1904, and Leyendecker, an illustrator working within that same emerging culture of automobile leisure, gave Cluett Peabody's shirting campaign the texture of a racing gallery rather than a tailor's window.

The gentlemen belong to the same fictive type Leyendecker built across two decades of magazine covers, the Arrow Collar Man, dressed here in monochromatic formalwear with rust-tinged accents and starched detachable collars, a houndstooth cap tilted at an angle that reads as rehearsed rather than accidental. Every eye tracking something further off, past the chrome headlamp, past the striped sleeves and starched collars. Binoculars catching no reflection, only two dark lenses fixed on a horizon the viewer never reaches.
