About this Artwork

Und Doch, Max Klinger's etching for Vom Tode Zweiter Teil, shows a bare-legged man lifting both arms toward a pale streaked sky. Klinger worked this Symbolist plate in Leipzig, grounding the etched line with mezzotint tone for the cycle's 1910 second series.

His hands do not clasp; fingers splay open, reaching past the sky above him. His hair streams sideways in a windswept trail past one shoulder, and his back heel lifts off the shadowed foreground plane filling the sheet's lower half. Behind him a rocky outcrop breaks the horizon among low trees, and one diagonal cloud band cuts the pale sky corner to corner.

Cross-hatched shading builds the muscle and shadow of this academic male nude until the contrast reads almost photographic. Within a cycle reckoning with mortality, the raised gesture reads as an appeal against an unanswering sky, a reading the upward composition supports. O. Felsing's Berlin imprint marks the sheet's corner, quiet beside Klinger's signature. Above the unbroken dark ground, his hands remain open against the sky's last streak of grisaille gray.
Origin Story

Max Klinger (1857–1920) was the German Symbolist who etched dreams before Freud named them. Born in Leipzig and trained in Karlsruhe and Berlin, he mastered etching, aquatint, and drypoint, publishing print cycles like opus numbers — Paraphrase on the Finding of a Glove (1881), a fetishistic reverie born at a skating rink, and A Life (1884), confronting prostitution and bourgeois hypocrisy.

Paris sharpened him; Rome turned him to sculpture. His polychrome Beethoven, in marble, bronze, ivory, and alabaster, crowned the 1902 Vienna Secession beside Klimt's frieze. A theorist of the Gesamtkunstwerk, Klinger bridged Symbolism and Surrealism, haunting de Chirico, Munch, Kollwitz, and Ernst.
