About this Artwork

A Witch Surfing on a Sieve as if condemned to motion without mercy, horizon folding into pitch. Every etched highlight feels carved from coal: sleeves inflated, hair alive with static. Her voyage began in gossip, ends in terror — Turner’s print dragging folklore through the machinery of Enlightenment irony.

Beneath the comedy of airborne domesticity lurks punishment: woman as spectacle, power translated into ridicule. In A Witch Surfing on a Sieve, the mezzotint’s metallic half-tones shimmer like wet ash, capturing the moment belief and disbelief collide.
Origin Story

Charles Turner ARA (1774–1857) was an English engraver and draughtsman celebrated for his mastery of the mezzotint. Born in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, Turner’s early access to Blenheim Palace’s art collection shaped his visual sensibility. In London, he honed his craft under the great print publishers and produced portraits of the era’s most eminent figures. His collaboration with J. M. W. Turner on Liber Studiorum fused precision with atmosphere, helping define Romantic printmaking. Appointed Mezzotinto Engraver to the King in 1812 and later elected to the Royal Academy, Turner left behind over 900 works—portraits shimmering with texture, intellect, and quiet drama.
