Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s Spring transforms the human profile into a flourishing bouquet, layering hundreds of flowers into a living face. The painter, long admired for his eccentric allegories at the Habsburg court, wove artifice and observation together, each petal meticulously chosen to echo veins of flesh or folds of fabric.
The work reflects sixteenth-century Europe’s fascination with cataloguing flora and celebrating the cycles of the natural world. Blossoms spill into a garlanded head, while lettuce leaves and a citrus swell at the chest.
